ARTIST IN EDUCATION 1986 – 2006 Benitez created 0ver 60 public murals in collaboration with elementary school children in Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania. In 1999 she developed “the Seurat the Dot / Grandma Moses” style murals, seeing a need to involve more students in these collaborative, community and state funded projects. This solution came from looking at, Seurat’s La Grand Jatte, during a workshop and noticing the repeated innocence of children’s drawings. It occurred to her that the dot might be employed by all hands and the really gifted and talented skills could be superimposed upon the developed landscape- background. This repeated stippling method enabled her to work with entire school populations, allowing her to incorporate the gifts and talents of over 500 students per project. The acrylic-on-board murals, range from 96″ x 96″ to an entire corridor wall.
